Around the World in 35 Romance Books
I love to travel.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m also semi-terrified of getting lost (though the more I do it, the more I realize it isn’t all that scary) and of being robbed or attacked. But after my husband passed, I told myself that I wasn’t going to let those fears control me anymore. I’m traveling more and more.
Nevertheless, my wallet still dictates how far I can roam. Since I can’t yet see the world the way I want to, I thought to myself, why leave the house? I can travel with my imagination through a very powerful vehicle: books.
Books have always been where I prefer to turn in order to learn something. Nonfiction, in particular, is great for this, but there is also an atmosphere that can be absorbed through reading a fiction book set in a certain place. My trip to the UK this past summer enriched my ability to tell stories set in the places I visited. Standing in a certain place and soaking in that atmosphere gave me a better understanding and appreciation for that city, even if I write books set centuries in the past when everything would have looked very different.
So, for my own personal reading list this year, I have chosen 35 romance books set around the world by authors who have visited or lived near where they have set their books. And these authors have been gracious enough to join me on my blog to share a bit more about the setting they chose for that particular book.
I’m starting close to home, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada — where I’ve visited once or twice years ago on school trips but haven’t much stepped outside a museum or the Rideau canal. From there, I’ll take you (and me) on a journey around the world to places I dream of visiting, one book at a time.
